How we won Awwwards’ Site of The Day (twice!)

Our journey to winning the web's most sought after award

Lewis Davis

If you work within the creative industry, and in particular the world of website design and development, you’ll already be familiar with Awwwards. For those of you who aren’t, consider it the digital encyclopaedia of all the best and most creative websites ever created.

It’s the place we all go when we’re searching for inspiration or to see the latest cutting edge creations in the web design and development industry. The highly coveted Site of the Day award is every digital designer’s dream, and is considered the ultimate recognition of success amongst the digital creative community. This award is only achieved by truly innovative websites, and the voting system cannot be rigged, allowing smaller agencies like ourselves the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the great work we’ve been doing for our wonderful clients.

It’s been a long time coming and a fantastic journey to get here, but we are immensely pleased and honoured to be able to announce that this week, we’ve been awarded a Site of the Day award for our recent work on the design and build of brotherfilmco.com.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy, but it has always been our goal. Prior to today, we had already achieved 9 Honorable Mentions and 4 Mobile Excellence awards for our work on projects including:

For now though, let us tell you more about the project we delivered for Brother Film Co, a site that we set out to win a SOTD award for right from the word go.

The client

Brother Film Co is a creatively-led, video and music production company, run by a group of brothers. They are a small video production agency who are smashing it in the video production space, working with brands such as Red Bull, Sky and Doctor Martens, to name just a few.

The problem

Brother’s old website was a simple Squarespace site which did not meet their needs and didn’t properly reflect their brand or the amazing work they’re doing for their clients.  It had gotten them so far, however, they had eventually outgrown it and wanted an upgrade.

The brief

To design and build a fully bespoke WordPress website that could be used for both the Brother film as well as their music business; with both sites independent of one another, but closely interlinked. The film site had to lead with its video case studies, and the music site had to easily allow users to browse, play and download sample tracks.

The solution

We created a set of templates which could work for both the film and music sites, maintaining a close link yet a clear distinction between the two. Both featured a neat scroll-based WebGL logo interaction to help bring the brand to life, using reflections to give the site a more immersive feel to it. The music site including the addition of a custom-built music library, allowing visitors to easily browse and sample playlists without the need of a third-party solution.

The best bits:

  • WebGL scroll-based logomark with reflections
  • Json scroll-based logo animation
  • Custom / multiple cursor styles
  • Scroll up to music site feature
  • Animated screensaver
  • Custom music library
